One of the World’s Largest District Coooling Systems, Powered by the Baltic Sea
General Information
- The District Cooling system is owned and operated by Stockholm Exergy and is the largest system in Europe and on of the largest in the world with a total length of approximately 260 km
- The first cooling pilot delivery was made in 1995 and the system today provides cooling solutions to more than 100 customers and approx. 600 buildings with a total demand of >300 MW (100.000 TR).
- The primary cooling source is cold water from the Baltic Sea and the system also utilizes waste heat and includes large cold water storage facilities.
Our Role
- Pre Devcco funding members of Devcco had the executive governance and management position for development, implementation and expansion to full scale operation between 1997-2002
- 2024 -> Devcco has supported Stockholm Exergi with Strategy review and future expansion road-map
Benefits from the District Cooling
- The implemented DC system reached a more than 4 times more efficient cooling production than individual air conditioning solutions
- By 2002 the Stockholm DC system reduce 126,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually compared to conventional chillers
- With introducing the Clean, Efficient, Competitive and Resilient District Cooling the Stockholm Utility was able to become a full-service provider of Cooling and Heating
- Sector coupling benefit; Increased utilization time of existing city electricity grids and sub stations by centralize the cities cooling production
