Swedavia’s Commitment to Eco-Friendly Airport Operations

Swedavia owns, operates and develops a network of Swedish airports including the Stockholm Arlanda airport, and is a world leader in developing airports with the least possible climate impact.

At Stockholm Arlanda Airport, Swedavia operates highly efficient and sustainable district heating and district cooling systems supplying the terminals and a large number of other buildings in the airport area. Some of the components in these energy systems are biofuel boilers, an aquifer thermal energy storage and lake source free cooling.

Devcco has provided services to Swedavia since 2017 and has led and participated in several business development projects including an investment program aimed at expanding and reinvesting in energy facilities and other airport utilities and media, and a strategic assessment of airports as energy hubs.

Swedavia’s Environmental Commitment and Expansion Initiatives

The heating and cooling projects were originally initiated to cope with the expansion of the airport, but the projects also help Swedavia to reach their environmental goal of having zero emissions of carbon dioxide. Several of the projects were included in the Swedavia green bond financing portfolio. The largest projects were to build a new boiler that use bio-oil as fuel, followed by a cooling project to increase the use of lake water and ground water as natural cooling sources. The Energy Hub project was initiated to frame the demand and supply of renewable energy supply to all airports in Sweden owned by Swedavia. The scope included electrification of ground transports, future long term opportunities for electric flights and hydrogen flights with near airport production of hydrogen.

Devcco’s Strategic Involvement and Expertise

Devcco has participated in several ways, but the main focus has been on supporting the projects with business development aspects and also being member of the steering committee of the projects. “Business” and “Governance” being the lead words. Among the specific tasks performed by Devcco are Energy Master Planning for the future expansion of Arlanda airport, both for air-side and land-side of the airport. Various Life Cycle Costs and cash-flow analyses have been made to support decision processes. Devcco has also developed and supported the implementation of a refrigerant strategy for the organization. The services performed by Devcco have been made in close collaboration with other external technical consultancy firms assigned by Swedavia.

The main values we have brought to the customer is helping them find cost efficient solutions and helping them manage feasibility stages and investment decision processes in an efficient and goal-oriented way. The services have provided the customer with possible strategies and overview for implementing innovative technologies and developing new business models to drive growth and adapt to changing market dynamics.
